Early Spring Gardening Chores
There are many things to do for garden chores in the spring. You have to remove the weeds in the old garden, prune the bushes, fertilize the yard, and even the soil ready for the new garden. It is never too early to get the yard and other areas ready for your garden.
Here are some other ideas for garden chores to make your home better. Begin by walking your property. Look for different areas such as the walkways that may need some attention. There are most likely wear from the winter to your steps and walkways. Look for cracks in the cement you can repair with concrete filler.
Notice any holes or tunnels the pesky rodents added to your yard. Fill in the holes and smash the tunnels, filling in any holes the tunnels formed in the yard. Add grass seed to the areas that may be affected from the holes and tunnels. You might also need to add dirt or soil to the areas as well. Clean the birdhouse and old nests from the trees and bushes. Scrub out the birdbaths and make them ready for the birds that visit your yard by making the birdbaths ready for their arrival.
Remove the older bulbs that did not produce last year. Plant new bulbs or add to the current garden and other areas of the yard. You may also want to change the look of the old gardens completely. Get your bulbs in the ground in the spring to allow the bulbs to flower on schedule.
Repair the mulch in the yard. You may have to remove the old mulch or just add newer mulch. The wood chips and mulch tend to rot so remove any that is not in good shape to provide the appearance and moisture to the plants and shrubs. Reshape your bushes and shrubs. This is the time of the year to do the pruning before the new growth starts. Remove the old and broken limbs allowing the trees and shrubs to avoid wasting their energy on bad areas of the plants. Cut the perennials to ground level. Allow them to have new growth without fighting the old growth from last year. Give them a fresh new start this year. Cut back the ornamental grasses for the same reason. They need to have new growth so the older growth will retard the new growth. Cut them back to six inches tall for the better chances of producing healthier growths.
Clean the gutters removing the leaves and branches. Check for damaged areas that may leak or be disconnected. Replace the damaged areas and you will be happy when it starts to rain.
