Plant An Edible Garden

Planting a garden with edible plants is the main goal of every gardener. Using the different types of plants mean a prosperous garden vegetable and herb, you can eat and save for the winter months.

Leafy vegetables are best eaten right out of the garden. They are delicious as well as nutritional. They best when consumed before they become dry and have woody stems. Plant the vegetables in a shady area so they remain moist. They can be grown in garden or in containers. They take two to four weeks from the time they are planted to produce the edible vegetation. Plant the seeds at different times to increase the time you have the fresh vegetables such as one group is planted the first of May then plant the second batch the middle to late weeks in May. Do this throughout the summer for more fresh vegetables during the summer.

Vegetables with roots and tubers form their flesh inside the soil such as onions, potatoes, and carrots. Potatoes require rich soil with plenty of fertilizer in the soil as well as loose soil that retains moisture and breathes for the plants. Carrots need deep soil that is also rich and aerated. Beets and onions grow in small areas. They multiply from the few seeds you use so sow the seeds sparely. The richer the soil for these types of vegetable the better crop you will have.

Perennial vegetables such as asparagus, rhubarb, and artichokes require less effort for their crops to be harvested and enjoyed. They need to be planted about three feet apart allowing for proper growth as they do spread out over time. They need soil that is well drained that is rich in nutrients that is free of weeds. Artichokes like the well-lit areas to grow and thrive. They also need the well drainage of the soil and the rich nutrients. Rhubarb loves sunny locations that are moist. They can be also placed in shady locations yet the sunny location is the best for this plant.

Growing the fruit baring plants and trees is another option for the garden. They all require rich soil and nutrients to produce the fruits. They flower in the spring with the fruits to be harvested in the late summer or early fall. Avoid planting taller trees around the fruit trees since they require direct sunlight to grow the fruits. They are a long-term plant that will continue to produce fruit for years, so make sure to plant the trees in a location where you want them to be in the years to come.

When planting strawberries allow for their expansion since the plants will multiply each year. They love to take over the areas they are located. They only produce fruit for two or three years but since they do multiply, they tend to reproduce new plants each year adding to their appeal to many gardeners. They need rich soil that is rich in nutrients as well as moisture. Using straw around the plants helps to reduce the weeds and keep the right amounts of moisture for the plants/
